Film Scanning
No matter how many advancements are made with digital photography, there will always be something special about film photography. Filters and presets have been made to make digital images appear analog, but you just can’t beat the real thing. Whether you have film, slides, or transparencies, we can take care of scanning for you.
Tech Specs
We use a Heidelberg Topaz for all of our film, slide, and transparency scanning. The Topaz is one of the highest quality flatbed scanners on the market. This flatbed can accommodate materials up to 12″x18″, and its quality rivals drum scanners. With a 5080 dpi true optical resolution and 4.0 d-max, we’re able to generate very large, high-resolution, highly detailed files.
Unlike drum scanners, the Topaz does not require your film to be oil-mounted. This saves your film from being exposed to the chemical cleaning solution used to remove the oil.
Scanning Pricing
Less than 10 items: $75 per scan
10+ items: $60 per scan
The Heidelberg Topaz is a brilliant scanner for creating incredibly large, detailed, high-resolution files. As such, these scans are not quick, so we are not able to offer batch-scanning pricing. Our scans are perfectly suited to creating fine art prints of your images and can be used to make large prints.
File Preparation Pricing
If you’d like to make giclee prints of our scans, there is a required file preparation before making final prints. This file preparation will include color/tonal adjustments, multiple rounds of proofing, and a file cleanup to remove any dust, hairs, scratches, or other flaws. The file preparation is $125 per image.
When you come in to view the final proof, you may request changes if there is anything that looks off to you. Once we have a final, approved proof, we can go ahead with the final prints. You can find more information about our printing services here.

FAQ
How do I get started?
If you have negatives, slides, or other film you’d like to create high-resolution scans of, just let us know! You can reach us at 703-684-0005, or via e-mail at info@oldtowneditions.com. We do require appointments, so please reach out if you’d like to set up a time for a consultation or to drop off your film.
How do I receive my files?
You have a few options for receiving your files. Most commonly, we send files via Hightail, which will send you a download link. These links are set to expire on a certain date to help keep your files safe. If you prefer, we can put your files on a USB drive. You can provide your own, or you can purchase one from us.
How do I get Discounts?
Discounts on scanning are based on volume. If you bring in 10 or more items at one time to be scanned, we will discount the scans to $60 each.
I have hundreds of negatives to scan, can I get a better price?
We specialize in art reproduction and fine art printing, and the equipment we use reflects those services. Our Heidelberg Topaz is a brilliant scanner for creating very large, high-resolution files, perfect for making high-quality giclee prints and enlarging images. This equipment serves our needs and goals, but it is simply not a batch scanner. Scans can take up to 20 minutes depending on the scanning resolution, with smaller scans still taking an average of 5-10 minutes. As such, we simply do not offer batch scanning services.
If you have a large volume of negatives to scan, and just need basic scans, it may be worth investing in a basic home scanner. We would recommend coming to us with any negatives that you want to do something special with and need a larger file of.
