The Importance of Proofing

At least one proof print is required before final prints are created. No matter how perfectly calibrated your monitor may be, what you see on screen is not going to be exactly the same as a physical print. Monitors are backlit, which impacts the appearance of your images. This is why it’s important to see a proof print before making final prints, especially if you plan to make large prints.

We want to make sure you are happy with the appearance of the proof print before making large or multiple final prints. If you aren’t fully happy with the proof print, adjustments can be made before you end up with prints you don’t love.

Proofing Fees

We have two levels of proofing, and we will determine what is required when we review your image. Proofing/file preparation are one-time-only fees, and both include archiving your final image for future printing.

Basic Proofing:

If your file is in good shape and does not need significant adjustment, it will fall into our basic proofing category. This includes file formatting, minor adjustments, and one 12″ proof print. The fee for basic proofing is $50 per image.

File Preparation:

If your file needs more significant adjustments, a full file preparation is required. This includes file formatting, detailed color/tonal adjustments, retouching, and multiple rounds of proofing. The file preparation is $125 per image.

Final Prints

Once you’ve approved a proof, you’re ready to make final prints. Your image will be archived in our system, and we keep all of our equipment strictly color managed, so you can order prints as you need them with the confidence that prints ordered years from now will match prints ordered today.

Our paper and canvas are priced a bit differently. Paper is most commonly priced by the sheet, and we print on the largest flat sheets available. Canvas prints and oversized paper prints will be priced by the total square inches of printing. You can find more information and pricing for our printing services here.

FAQ

How do I get started?

If you’re ready to start printing your digital art/photography, or would like a more in-depth consultation, just let us know! You can reach us at 703-684-0005, or via e-mail at info@oldtowneditions.com. We do require appointments, so please reach out if you’d like to set up a time to come to the studio. Alternatively, you can send us your file(s) using our file upload link to get a quote. Just be sure to include info about what surface you’d like to print on, what size prints you’d like, and how many.

Who will have access to my files?

No one but you! We claim no copyright on your files, they are yours and yours alone. Once in our archive, you are the only person authorized to order prints from those files, or request to have the files sent to you or someone else. If a family member or friend wants to order a print from one of your files, we’ll need permission from you before taking a print order from a third party.

How do I get Discounts?

Discounts on the proofing/file preparation are determined on a case-by-case basis, and are typically based on quantity of images. Discounts may also be available when proofing is combined with a large print order.

Quantity discounts are available for print orders, starting as low as 2 sheets or 1,000 square inches.

Can I skip the proofing?

The short answer is no. Proofing gives you the opportunity to see how your digital file will look when translated to a print, and is an incredibly important step. If the proof doesn’t look as you expect, we can make adjustments before you order prints.

However, since we proof on the paper or canvas you choose, if you only need one print that is 12″ or smaller, the proof print can serve as your final print. In this case you wouldn’t need to pay for an additional print, as long as you’re happy with the proof.
