What’s Involved?

There are three steps in the art reproduction process, and we’ll briefly go over each one here. If you’d like to discuss the art reproduction process in more detail, please reach out to schedule a consultation! We’re happy to walk you through the entire process, either in person or over the phone.

The Image Capture and File Preparation are both one-time-only fees. Discounts are available at most steps of the process, and we’ll always let you know when your order qualifies for these discounts.

Step 1: Image Capture

To digitize your artwork we use a digital scanning back paired with a traditional view camera. This allows us to create very large, high-quality files that are perfect for making print reproductions. We use polarizing filters to eliminate glare and set up our lights based on the individual needs of each piece of art.

When paired with the file preparation (step 2), image capture starts at $60 per piece. If your artwork uses metallic paint/leaf, or is 5′ or larger, there will be additional fees.

Step 2: File Preparation

The file preparation is when we perfect your image for printing. We’ll run proof prints to compare to your artwork and make color/tonal adjustments until we have a match that is as exact as possible. At this point, you will come in to view the proof print with your original and have the opportunity to request adjustments. Once you’ve approved a final proof, we’ll do a file cleanup to digitally remove any dust/hairs/stray marks from the image.

Once the file prep work is done, we give you the final files and archive them in our system as well. From this point forward, your files will be ready to print any time you need them.

Step 3: Printing

All of our materials are archival and museum-quality. We offer a range of paper types with varying texture, white point, and weight. For our paper prints, we print on the largest flat sheets available to ensure beautiful flat prints in sizes all the way up to 30″x40″, and have roll papers available for larger sizes.

For our canvas prints, we have three different varnish finishes: matte, satin, and glossy. We also offer canvas stretching, and we custom cut and assemble the stretcher bars based on your exact print size.

Our paper prints are priced by the sheet, while canvas prints are priced by the total square inches in our order. Both options have quantity discounts available. You can click here to find a more in-depth look at our print pricing, or here to learn more about the materials we use.

FAQ

How do I get started?

If you’re ready to start reproducing your artwork, or would like a more in-depth consultation, just let us know! You can reach us at 703-684-0005, or via e-mail at info@oldtowneditions.com. We do require appointments, so please reach out if you’d like to set up a time for a consultation or to drop off your artwork.

Who will have access to my files?

No one but you! We claim no copyright on your files, they are yours and yours alone. Once in our archive, you are the only person authorized to order prints from those files, or request to have the files sent to you or someone else. If a family member or friend wants to order a print from one of your files, we’ll need permission from you before taking a print order from a third party.

How do I get Discounts?

There are several opportunities for discounts in the art reproduction process.

The most common discounts are on the image capture. Here are the two ways you can get discounts:
1. If you bring in 10+ pieces for image capture and file preparation, the digital captures will be fully discounted. That’s a savings of $600!
2. If you bring in multiple pieces for image capture and file preparation that are the same size you will only pay for one of the image captures. (Example, if you bring in three 8×10 paintings, you will pay for one $60 image capture, and the other two will be fully discounted).

Discounts on the file preparation are very rare, as this is where the majority of the time, materials, and labor of art reproduction fall. Any potential discounts are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Quantity discounts are available for print orders, starting as low as 2 sheets or 1,000 square inches.

You can view our package deals for larger volume orders here.

Can I photograph my artwork myself?

Photographing artwork is not a simple task, and if your goal is to create high-quality reproductions it is absolutely worth investing in having a professional photograph your artwork for you. Our studio setup is highly specialized for digitizing artwork, ensuring we eliminate common file quality issues like glare, uneven lighting and poor focus.

If you have a photograph you’ve taken of your artwork, we’re happy to take a look and give you feedback, but we do reserve the right to reject a file for printing if it does not meet our quality standards. Even if we are using a file you’ve provided, we will still require the file preparation before making final prints, so if you are willing to make that investment, you may as well make the additional investment of having us digitize your artwork in order to get the highest quality possible.
